How to Verify a Mover in San Diego

For a move within California, look up the company in the Bureau of Household Goods and Services license search; for a move out of state, check its USDOT number in FMCSA's mover search. A licensed mover must also give you a written estimate after seeing your belongings and a Not to Exceed price before the move.

Who licenses movers in California?

The Bureau of Household Goods and Services (BHGS), part of the Department of Consumer Affairs. Oversight moved there from the California Public Utilities Commission on July 1, 2018. Look up a mover by name or permit number at search.dca.ca.gov.

BHGS doesn't regulate storage facilities, international moves or moves that neither begin nor end in California.

How do you check an interstate mover?

Use FMCSA's Search Movers tool to confirm the company's USDOT number, operating authority and complaint history. A July 2026 California release adds that movers handling moves that start or end in California must also hold a BHGS license.

What documents should a California mover give you?

  • A written estimate made after a visual inspection.
  • The Agreement for Moving Services, with the mover's CAL-T number and a Not to Exceed price, at least three days before the move if you booked that far ahead.
  • The Important Notice About Your Move, which you sign before any work begins.
  • The booklet "Important Information for Persons Moving Household Goods." If the mover doesn't provide it, it owes you $100.

What else should you check?

BHGS suggests checking the company's complaint history with the Better Business Bureau, asking for the names and IDs of the crew, and noting the vehicle make, model and plates. Be wary of a P.O. box as the business address, estimates far below others, and reviews that look paid.
