Moving in Coronado, CA
Moving trucks can use the San Diego–Coronado Bridge, since state rules bar only explosives and flammable-placarded tankers, but there are only two road routes onto the island. Coronado's container permit allows seven days and 20 feet of curb, and it isn't issued at all if the container fits on your property.

Can a moving truck cross the Coronado Bridge?
Yes. Title 21, §1403.1 of the California Code of Regulations bars Class A and B explosives and flammable-placarded tank vehicles from the bridge, and nothing in it limits an ordinary moving truck. Very large loads, over 17 feet high, 8.5 feet wide, 75 feet long or 80,000 pounds, need a City transportation permit.
The Coronado ferry is not an option: it carries passengers, bikes and small personal items only.
What happens if the bridge is closed on moving day?
The detour is the Silver Strand, about 23 miles, which Caltrans estimated adds 30 to 60 minutes per vehicle. Because California's tariff bills hourly moves for double the driving time, a bridge closure can noticeably raise the bill. Ask your mover how they handle detours before you sign.
Do you need a permit for a PODS container in Coronado?
Yes. Containers in the right-of-way need a Right-of-Way Permit, and the City won't issue one if there's adequate space on private property. A container may stay up to seven calendar days and use no more than 20 linear feet of curb.
You'll need $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate liability coverage (a homeowner's or renter's rider can work), a supplier with a Coronado business license, and No Parking – Tow Away signs posted at least 72 hours before delivery. Trash bins must come from EDCO, the City's franchised hauler.
What's different about moving into Coronado Shores?
Coronado Shores is ten 15-story condominium towers between the Hotel del Coronado and the Silver Strand, built from 1970 to 1978. High-rise moves here depend on elevator reservations, loading-area rules and insurance certificates set by each tower's association, so get those requirements before you book a date.
How much do movers cost in Coronado?
Hourly rates follow the San Diego market, about $150 an hour for two movers in HireAHelper's October 2026 data. Coronado's housing is expensive (median owner-occupied value of $2,000,000 or more, median rent $3,257), and homes with high-value furniture are a reason to look closely at valuation coverage, not just the hourly rate.
Turnover is high, too. Only 78.7% of residents lived in the same house a year earlier, compared with 85% in the City of San Diego.
