Moving Insurance and Valuation Explained

Basic mover liability in California pays only $0.60 per pound per article, so a damaged 50-pound TV is worth $30 to the mover. You can buy Full Value protection for up to $2.20 per $100 of declared value, and the default liability cap is $20,000 unless you declare a different value.

What valuation options do California movers offer?

Item 136 of the 2026 Maximum Rate Tariff sets these options and maximum charges:

  • Basic: $0.60 per pound per article, included.
  • Actual Cash Value: up to $1.12 per $100 of declared value.
  • Full Value: up to $2.20 per $100 of declared value; $0.67 with a $250 deductible; $0.38 with a $500 deductible.
  • Liability is capped at $20,000 actual cash value unless you declare a different value.

How does valuation work on interstate moves?

Under federal rules, Full Value Protection, which covers repair or replacement up to the declared value, is the default unless you sign to choose Released Value. Released Value costs nothing extra but pays no more than 60 cents per pound per article.

How do you file a damage claim?

In writing, within nine months of delivery, for both California and interstate moves. In California, the mover must acknowledge the claim within 30 days and pay, decline or make a firm offer within 60 days. Photograph belongings before the move, as BHGS recommends, and note damage on the delivery paperwork.
