San Diego Moving Checklist
Start about eight weeks out if you're moving in summer, when San Diego crews and military shipments book up fastest. The steps that are specific to San Diego are checking the mover's state license, booking any street-container permit at least three working days ahead, and getting rid of hazardous waste before move day.

Six to eight weeks before
- Request in-home or walk-through estimates from at least three movers. California requires written estimates after a visual inspection.
- Look up each mover's license with the Bureau of Household Goods and Services, and its USDOT number with FMCSA if you're leaving California.
- On PCS orders? Schedule your shipment as soon as you have orders, and at least 90 days ahead in peak season.
- Ask your HOA or building for move rules, elevator reservations and insurance certificate requirements.
Three to four weeks before
- Book the mover and confirm the date in writing.
- Apply for any street permit you need. In the City of San Diego, a container permit needs at least three working days' notice and signs posted 72 hours ahead; some cities take 10 to 15 working days.
- Book junk removal, and schedule a hazardous waste drop-off appointment for paint, batteries and propane.
- Decide on valuation coverage. Default coverage pays only $0.60 per pound per article.
The week before
- Expect the Agreement for Moving Services and Important Notice About Your Move, with a Not to Exceed price, at least three days before the move.
- Photograph or video your belongings, as BHGS recommends.
- Pack irreplaceable items, documents and medications to move yourself.
- Confirm parking. Post temporary No Parking signs if your permit requires them.
Move day and after
- Get copies of everything you sign before work begins.
- Check the inventory before signing it, and note any damage on delivery.
- License your dog within 30 days of moving into a new San Diego County jurisdiction.
- File any damage claim in writing within nine months of delivery.
