Moving Scams to Avoid in San Diego

The most common moving scam is a low estimate that jumps once your belongings are on the truck, followed by a demand for more money before delivery. California regulators targeted exactly that in a December 2025 sweep that included San Diego County.

Facts checked November 6, 2026. Independent guide; not a moving company.

What are the warning signs of a moving scam?

FMCSA's red-flag list and BHGS consumer guidance include:

  • A quote by phone or online without seeing your belongings. BHGS says these are illegal for California moves.
  • No written estimate, or a price set after loading.
  • A demand for cash or a large deposit before the move.
  • A request to sign blank documents.
  • No required booklet (FMCSA's Your Rights and Responsibilities, or California's Important Information booklet).
  • No local address, license or insurance information on the website, or a phone answered with a generic "Movers."
  • A rental truck instead of a company vehicle on moving day.
  • A claim that you have far more belongings than estimated after loading begins.

What can you do if a mover holds your belongings?

For a California move, the tariff requires the mover to unload once you pay the Not to Exceed price plus any valid Change Orders. For an interstate move with a non-binding estimate, the mover must release your goods on payment of 110% of the estimate.

Report the mover to BHGS for in-state moves or to FMCSA at 1-888-368-7238 for interstate moves.

How do you protect yourself before booking?

Verify the license, get at least three written estimates after walk-throughs, pay with a method you can dispute, and get a receipt for any deposit. BHGS also warns to confirm that the company you paid is the mover you hired.
