What does self-storage cost in San Diego?

StorageCafe's September 2026 data (Yardi Matrix) shows average monthly street rates:

  • 5x5: $75 ($80 climate-controlled)
  • 10x10: $174 ($172 climate-controlled)
  • 10x15: $248 ($241 climate-controlled)

What happens if you fall behind on storage rent?

Under California's Self-Service Storage Facility Act, once rent is unpaid for 14 consecutive days, the facility can send a preliminary lien notice, and your access can end at least 14 days after it's mailed. A lien sale notice must give at least another 14 days and include a form you can use to dispute the lien. Excess sale proceeds can be claimed for one year.

Is a storage unit regulated like a mover?

No. BHGS regulates household movers but says it does not regulate storage facilities. If a mover stores your goods in transit, the moving tariff's storage-in-transit rules and valuation still apply.
