How Much Should You Tip Movers?
Tipping is customary but optional; consumer guides commonly suggest $20 to $50 per mover for a typical move, or $5 to $10 per mover per hour on a short local job. In a ConsumerAffairs survey of 1,000 recent movers, only 3% said they never tip.

What do surveys and guides recommend?
- ConsumerAffairs (May 2026, survey of 1,000 recent movers): $20 to $50 per mover; $5 to $10 per mover per hour on short local moves; $40 to $100 per mover for full-day moves. About 46% said movers should always be tipped.
- NerdWallet (June 2025): 10% to 20% of the total is common, or $4 to $15 per mover per hour.
- HireAHelper (October 2026): about $4 to $5 per mover per hour.
Should you tip if the move went badly?
A tip is a thank-you, not part of the price. ConsumerAffairs found 61% of people felt pressure to tip even when service wasn't great. If items were damaged, note it on the paperwork and file a claim; tipping doesn't affect your rights.
Is a tip ever part of the bill?
It shouldn't be. In California, what you owe is set by the Agreement for Moving Services and its Not to Exceed price. Anything beyond that, including a tip, is up to you.
