Junk Removal and Disposal When Moving in San Diego

If you live in the City of San Diego, there's no curbside bulky-item pickup, which the City has deferred through fiscal year 2029, so large items need a hauler or a trip to Miramar. Mattresses and household hazardous waste can be dropped off free by City residents.

Where can you take furniture and junk in San Diego?

The Miramar Landfill accepts self-hauled loads; fees are set in the City's current fiscal-year schedule, and uncovered loads are charged $50. Check the schedule before you go.

City residents can drop off mattresses free at the collection site just outside the landfill entrance, up to 10 per trip, as long as they're dry and free of bedbugs.

What do you do with paint, propane and batteries?

Don't put them on the moving truck. City residents can use the Miramar household hazardous waste facility free by appointment, open Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; it takes paint, batteries, motor oil, pool chemicals and propane cylinders. Residents of other areas should use the County program or their city's hauler.

Should you hire a junk removal company?

For bulky furniture and appliances, a hauler saves time. Get a written price before they load, and ask where items will be taken.
