Senior and Downsizing Moves in San Diego

A senior move in San Diego is usually a downsizing move, which means sorting, disposal and packing take more time than the truck. County residents 65 and older can request door-to-door pickup of household hazardous waste, and City of San Diego residents can drop it off free by appointment.

How do you get rid of things before a downsizing move?

The City of San Diego doesn't offer curbside bulky-item pickup; the program is deferred through fiscal year 2029. City residents can take mattresses free to the collection site outside the Miramar Landfill entrance, and the Miramar household hazardous waste facility accepts paint, batteries and propane free by appointment.

In unincorporated areas, the County's household hazardous waste program offers door-to-door pickup for residents 65 and older or with disabilities at 1-877-R-1-EARTH.

What should you ask a mover for a senior move?

Ask whether the company packs and unpacks, whether it will set up beds the same day, and how it bills packing time. California's tariff treats packing and unpacking as accessorial services billed at no more than its packing rates.

Request the estimate in writing after a walk-through, and make sure the Not to Exceed price arrives at least three days before the move.

How can family members check the mover?

Look up the company's license with the Bureau of Household Goods and Services before booking. In its December 2025 sweep, which included San Diego County, the Bureau warned about low estimates followed by price increases once goods are in transit.
