How much does it cost to move a piano up stairs?

Item 140 of the 2026 Maximum Rate Tariff caps flight charges for pianos and organs at $39.30 for the first flight and $19.71 for each additional flight on distance-rated moves. A first inside flight is at least eight steps. On hourly local moves, stairs show up as extra time instead.

Is a piano covered if it's damaged?

Under basic coverage, at $0.60 per pound per article. A 500-pound upright would be covered for $300 at most, far below its value. Full Value protection, at up to $2.20 per $100 of declared value, is the option to price for valuable pieces. Our valuation guide explains the choices.

What should you ask a specialty mover?

Ask how they'll protect and secure the item, whether they use a piano board or crating, and whether the item is listed on the estimate and inventory. California estimates must follow a visual inspection, so point the item out during the walk-through.
