Moving With Storage in San Diego

When a mover holds your belongings between pickup and delivery, California calls it storage-in-transit, and the tariff caps the charges and limits it to 90 days. If you're renting your own unit instead, a 10x10 in San Diego averaged $174 a month in September 2026.

How is storage-in-transit priced in California?

Item 160 of the 2026 tariff caps storage-in-transit handling at $8.95 per 100 pounds (minimum $44.57), the first day at $3.08 per 100 pounds and each additional day at $0.15 per 100 pounds, for a period of 90 days. Valuation during storage is priced separately.

Who regulates long-term storage?

Not the moving regulator. BHGS says it doesn't regulate storage facilities. Self-storage in California is governed by the Self-Service Storage Facility Act; see our storage options guide for lien and notice rules.

Mover storage or self-storage?

Storage-in-transit keeps the mover responsible for your goods until delivery, which is simpler for a gap of days or weeks. Self-storage gives you access to your things but means two loads and two unloads.
